7 Home Remedies To Get Rid Of Dandruff In Kids

Itchy, flakey and powdery scalp are some common signs of dandruff in your little one’s hair. Although, not contagious; dandruff is a clear indication of an underlying skin problem and therefore, must be addressed with immediate concern.

Natural remedies work very well to treat dandruff in kids. If you are looking for chemical-free alternatives to resolve this problem, here are seven remedies you can try:

#1. Lemon Juice

Lemon is one of the best natural exfoliators. It can remove the dead skin cells and reduce any accumulated flakes on the scalp. Dilute some lemon juice with water. Massage it into the scalp of the child and leave it on for a few minutes. Then, wash it off with a mild shampoo.

It is best to use lemon juice once or twice a week. Using it too frequently can cause dryness and remove the natural oils from the scalp.

#2. Butter

Butter is extremely useful in moisturizing the scalp and hair. This makes it one of the most effective dandruff treatments. Butter works on all kinds of hair and can remove the dry flakes from the first use itself. All you have to do is massage some unsalted butter onto the child’s scalp.

Allow it to sit for about an hour. Rinse it well with a mild shampoo and repeat it once a week for dandruff free, soft hair.

#3. Eggs

Eggs have always been used as a suitable remedy for dry hair and scalp which is the primary reason for dandruff. It makes the hair of your child healthier, too. Beat one egg well.

Then wet your child’s hair slightly. Apply the egg onto the scalp and the hair. Allow it to stay for a few minutes. Then wash the hair with plain cold water, follow it up with a mild shampoo, and rinse with warm water.

#4. Neem

Neem is one of the oldest remedies for any skin related issues. It is highly anti-fungal and anti-bacterial in nature. If the cause for dandruff in case of your child is a fungal infection of the scalp, you can use neem as a sure shot remedy. Boil a few neem leaves in coconut oil.

Apply the residue on to the child’s scalp and allow it to rest. While neem fights the infection, coconut oil moisturizes the hair and the scalp, making sure that dandruff is kept at bay.

#5. Garlic

Of course, the pungent smell of garlic can be unsettling for children. However, it is one of the most effective home remedies for dandruff that is caused by infections of the scalp. It is a powerful anti-fungal, home treatment. Of course, it is the easiest treatment to find in an Indian kitchen.

All you need to do is crush a few cloves of garlic and mix it with water. Then wash the scalp with this water regularly until the signs of dandruff and flakes reduce. You can also apply garlic juice directly on the scalp in older children, as their skin is not as sensitive.

#6. Fenugreek Seeds

Fenugreek seeds have a cooling effect on the scalp and can ease the itchiness. These seeds also have several antifungal properties. Soak a few fenugreek seeds in water overnight. Then grind them into a paste. To make the treatment more effective, mix the paste with plain yogurt.

Apply the mixture onto the child’s scalp. Let it soak into the scalp for a few hours. Rinse it off with a mild shampoo. Use lukewarm water when you wash this paste off.

#7. Olive Oil

Olive oil is used for several hair and scalp related issues. It is easily available, easy to use and is very effective. Apply olive oil on your child’s scalp about 20 minutes before washing it. Rinse it off with a milk shampoo.

Olive oil moisturizes the scalp and helps in the production of natural oils, which keeps any signs of dandruff at bay. Using cold pressed virgin olive oil is the best option as it is natural and gentle on the child’s scalp.
