10 Healthy Halwa Recipes for Babies and Kids

Once your baby is above six months old, it's time to introduce semi solids and purees to the diet. Halwa recipes are usually a super hit with most of the babies this age. Soft, moist, and smooth, babies simply love eating halwas. Halwas and purees are also the best ways to introduce a variety of semi solids to your baby. You can make several combinations and try interesting recipes using an array of fruits or vegetables and even combine both with different flours such as wheat, ragi, or millet etc. for added nutrition.

Halwa recipes for babies and kids

#1. Banana and Ragi Halwa

Ingredients
  • 1 tablespoon Ragi flour
  • 1 ripe banana
Method
  • In a pan, add ¼ cup of water and bring it to boil.
  • Reduce the heat and add ragi powder and keep stirring.
  • Ragi usually thickens and gets cooked quickly.
  • Turn off the heat and allow it to cool down.
  • Meanwhile, in a plate mash a banana well so that there are no lumps.
  • Now add the mashed banana to the ragi mix and then mix well.
  • Ragi and banana halwa is ready to serve.

#2. Wheat and Apple Halwa

Ingredients
  • Whole wheat flour – ¼ cup
  • Apple – 1 medium size
  • Dates – 3 no.s
  • Jaggery or sugar powder – 1 tablespoon (Optional)
  • Ghee – 1 teaspoon
  • Water – 3/4 cup
Method
  • Soak the dates in hot water for ten minutes.
  • Peel the apple and chop them into cubes.
  • Puree the apple into a blender along with soaked dates without adding water.
  • Take 2 tablespoons of wheat flour into a pan along with ghee and roast it in a low flame till you get the aroma.
  • Then add ¾ cup of water and mix well so that there are no lumps formed.
  • Cook the wheat for 5 minutes on a low flame till it gets completely cooked.
  • Keep stirring and add the pureed apple mix along with jaggery and cook for 3 to 4 minutes more.
  • The halwa is ready to be served to your little one.

#3. Beetroot Dates Halwa

Ingredients
  • 1 medium size beetroot
  • 8 to 10 dates
  • 2 teaspoon ghee
  • Water as needed
Method
  • Wash, peel and chop the beetroot into small cubes.
  • Soak the dates in hot water for ten mins.
  • Pressure cook the beetroot for 3 to 4 whistles.
  • Grind them along with the dates into a fine paste.
  • Take a pan and add ghee then add the beetroot dates puree to it and cook for 5 minutes.
  • You can add sugar or jaggery (Optional) and stir well till the ghee leaves from sides.
  • Turn off the flame and the iron rich halwa is ready to be served.

#4. Banana Sooji Halwa

Ingredients
  • 1 Tablespoon sooji
  • 1 teaspoon ghee
  • 1 small banana
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
Method
  • Heat a pan and add 1 teaspoon ghee to it.
  • Once the ghee melts, add sooji and roast it till you get the aroma.
  • Now add hot water and sugar to the sooji and keep the flame low.
  • Cook it for 3 to 4 minutes and add mashed banana to it.
  • Turn off the flame and you have a yummy halwa ready for your kid.

#5. Wheat Halwa

Ingredients
  • 3 tablespoons whole wheat flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar or jaggery
  • ½ tablespoon Ghee
  • 180 ml water
Method
  • Take a bowl and mix the wheat flour with water and jaggery or sugar.
  • Stir well to remove the lumps and then you can filter it to remove any lumps.
  • In a pan, add the mixture and bring it to boil and keep stirring on a low flame.
  • When the mixture reaches a thicker consistency then add ghee.
  • Cook for a couple of minutes and turn off the flame.
  • Wheat halwa is ready for your little one.

#6. Carrot Halwa

Ingredients
  • Grated carrot 2
  • Milk ½ cup
  • Powdered jaggery 1 teaspoon
  • Dry fruit powder 1 teaspoon
  • Ghee 2 teaspoon
Method
  • In a pan add ghee and when the ghee melts add the grated carrots.
  • Stir well and add a little water and close the lid. Cook for 5 to 8 minutes.
  • Once the carrots are cooked well, then add the powdered jaggery and dry fruit powder and fry for a minute.
  • Now add the milk and cook well by stirring continuously.
  • When the halwa forms a whole mass and does not stick to the pan, it means it is done.
  • The halwa is ready to serve to your little one.

#7. Moong Dal Halwa

Ingredients
  • Yellow moong dal ½ cup
  • Milk ½ cup
  • Sugar or powdered jaggery ½ cup
  • Ghee 4 teaspoons
  • Water 1 cup
  • Cardamom 2
Method
  • Take water and sugar in a pan and bring it to boil.
  • Once the sugar is dissolved, keep it aside and add cardamom powder.
  • In a bowl, wash the moong dal and pat dry. Now roast the moong dal until golden brown.
  • Grind the moong dal and keep it aside. In a thick bottomed pan, add ghee and fry the moong dal for 2 to 3 minutes.
  • Now add milk and stir it well so that the milk is absorbed.
  • Then add the sugar water and keep stirring.
  • Once the halwa forms a whole mass and doesn’t stick to the pan then turn off the flame.
  • The halwa is ready to serve.

#8. Sweet Potato Halwa

Ingredients
  • Boiled and mashed sweet potato 1 medium size
  • 4 tablespoon ghee
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 cardamom (optional)
Method
  • In a pan, melt the ghee and add the mashed sweet potato.
  • Fry it for a couple of minutes.
  • Add milk and sugar and bring it to boil.
  • Stir continuously on a low flame till the halwa thickens a little.
  • Turn off the flame and serve hot.

#9. Pumpkin Halwa

Ingredients
  • 1 cup cooked and mashed pumpkin
  • 1 to 2 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 tablespoons ghee
  • ½ cup milk
  • A pinch of cardamom powder
Method
  • In a pan, add ghee and when it melts add the mashed pumpkin and fry for 3 to 4 minutes.
  • Now add milk and cardamom powder and stir well. Cook well till the milk is absorbed.
  • Add powdered sugar and stir well till the halwa thickens.
  • Turn off the flame and serve hot.

#10. Potato Halwa

Ingredients
  • Boiled and mashed potato 1 medium size
  • 2 tablespoon ghee
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 cardamom
Method
  • In a pan, melt the ghee and add the mashed potato.
  • Fry it for a couple of minutes.
  • Add sugar and a little water and cook well.
  • Stir continuously on a low flame till the halwa thickens.
  • Turn off the flame and serve hot.
