Nothing is more annoying than waking up and finding your baby’s face full of ugly mosquito bites? At times, I really feel like why are they only after my baby? Why can’t they go someplace else? These blood-sucking creatures are really a menace and it hurts immensely to see that they have been feeding upon your child’s sweet blood. When mosquitoes bite babies, one can see small red bumps along with swelling around the bite and rashes. In severe cases, the infant may also experience vomiting, fever and pus.
Babies may not get to know when the mosquito bites, but they feel the itch and have the urge to scratch their skin. This makes the scars all the more worse and blackish bite marks appear on the skin of the baby. Apart from scarring your child’s skin, these buzzing mosquitoes can also be the cause of various harmful diseases such as malaria, dengue, chikungunya and encephalitis.
Why do mosquitoes bite infants most and what can you do to prevent them?
Ok, we all know that infants get more mosquito bites than adults but why does that happen? Let’s take a look at the possible reasons:
- Baby Toiletries – The stuff that we use on babies, the baby lotions, creams and powders are usually perfumed and this is what attracts the mosquitoes. One should try and use fragrance-free products for babies.
- Exposed body parts – The uncovered parts of an infant’s body are the easiest targets for mosquitoes. Even if it’s hot, make your child wear some loose clothing but make it a point to cover him as much as you can.
- Moisture and sweat – Stagnant water in plants, beautifying show pieces like waterfalls and wet clothes are places where mosquitoes are able to breed. Sweat on your baby’s skin also attracts mosquitoes. Try and keep surfaces dry and wipe your baby’s sweat with a clean and dry hand towel.
- Uncovered meals – The sight and scent of food is really intriguing for mosquitoes so you need to keep all your food covered.
- Close windows and doors – Mosquitoes mostly appear in the evening. Close all the windows and doors in the late afternoon so that mosquitoes don’t get a chance to enter the house.
- Citronella oil – This is one of the most common constituents of a mosquito repellent. Just apply 2-3 drops of citronella oil on the exposed parts of your child’s body.Buy it here.
