As children enter their second year and become toddlers, they begin reaching key development milestones from crawling vigorously, walking and talking. This is the time when they begin to explore the boundaries established by your rule as well as their own physical and developmental limits. These little cuties now start developing their own character and traits and start blossoming into little people with independent personalities. Here’s a look at the key development milestones for 2 year old kids:
#1. Physical milestones: physical development includes both gross motor and fine motor skills.
Gross motor skill milestones:
- Can walk alone, stands on tiptoes
- Pulls toys behind while walking
- Begins to run
- Carries large toy or several toys while walking
- Kicks a ball
- Climbs onto and down from furniture on his/her own
- Walks up and down stairs holding on to support
Fine motor skill milestones:
- Scribbles on walls/paper
- Turns over container to pour out contents
- Builds tower of four blocks or more
- May use one one hand more frequently than the other
- May pull pants up and down
- Turn on the tap and wash hands
- Can hold utensils and crayons with fingers instead of a fist, although the grasp still may not be just right
#2. Language milestones:
- Points to object or picture when the name of the object is called out
- Recognizes names of familiar people, objects, and body parts
- Your child will be saying many single words by fifteen to eighteen months)By 2 years of age babies may master around 40 to 50 words.
- Some common words they may use include mommy, daddy, milk, hello, bye-bye, yes, no etc
- They will understand longer instructions, such as 'make teddy jump' or 'where's your doll?
- Your little one is no longer babbling. By eighteen to twenty-four month most children will begin putting together longer sentences such as "Mommy, I want milk" rather than just, "Milk Mommy."). Your baby will also begin to use pronouns like "I" and "me" instead of his name.
- Repeats words overheard in conversation
#3. Mental growth milestones:
- Finds objects even when they are hidden under something
- Begins to sort by shapes and colors
- Begins make-believe play
#4. Social and emotional milestones:
- Imitates behavior of others, especially adults and older children
- Starts becoming aware of himself/herself as separate from others
- Becomes increasingly enthusiastic about company of other children
- Demonstrates increasing independence, such as he/she may join other children in playing for a few minutes without you, may try and do certain things on his/her own such as trying to put on clothes or get out of them on their own
- Begins to show defiant behavior, such as may say no to many things, defend his possessions and may not want to share
- Increasing episodes of separation anxiety toward midyear, which then fade
Each child develops at his or her own pace and thus it is not always necessary that kids will perfect particular skills at an exact age, however the development milestones give a general idea of changes you may expect in your child at the particular age. It is quite normal for some kids to not meet all milestones or take a slightly different course and it may be nothing to be alarmed of.
However in case you see any any of the following signs of possible developmental delay for this age range , you should check with your paediatrician :
- Cannot walk by eighteen months
- Fails to develop a mature heel-toe walking pattern after several months of walking, or walks exclusively on toes
- Does not speak at least fifteen words by eighteen months
- Does not use two-word sentences by age two
- Does not seem to know the function of common household objects such as brush, telephone, bell, fork, spoon by fifteen months
- Does not imitate actions or words by the end of this period
- Does not follow simple instructions by age two
- Cannot push a wheeled toy by age two
It is amazing to see how your child is mastering new skills and learning new things. It fills your heart with so much pride when you see the baby who was staggering and falling while walking has transitioned to a smooth and more assured walk. In the months ahead your baby will become a more coordinated runner, learn to walk backward, turn corners, and with a little help, stand on one leg.
These early years are the time when parents eagerly look forward to each new milestone. Even for the babies these years are the golden period to build a strong foundation for learning. This is the period when child's brain grows and develops rapidly, together with other areas of their development. This is also the time when babies experience many growth spurts and require specific nutrition. The lack of any of the key nutrients from the diet of your baby may affect his physical as well as mental growth.
Many a times our normal day to day diet may not be able to provide sufficient nutrients for the specific demands of a growing body. This is where the need to provide holistic nutrition through toddler specific nutritional supplements comes in. Your child may specifically need some vitamin and/or mineral supplementation if your family's dietary practices limit the food groups available to him or her, for example, if your household is vegetarian or vegan (avoidance of eggs and dairy). Childhood is a critical time for growth and brain development, so particular vitamins and supplements may be recommended.
To ensure that your child is getting the optimum nutrition to be able to reach the recommended milestones for their age, you can opt for a nutritional supplement such as Enfagrow.
